On the third Sunday of June the Palio dei Rioni is held, a Roman-style horse race that focuses the competitive skills and the ancient rivalry between the "Rioni" or districts of Porta Cassero, Porta Fiorentina and Porta Romana. The event is preceded by an impressive historic-folklore procession which fills the old town centre with suggestive moments of ancient mediaeval life.
