The origins of this re-enactment festival (The contest of the boot) lie buried in the past. Towards the middle of the XV century, repeated border skirmishes disturbed relations between Osimo and Filottrano. In April 1466, the Osimo magistrate decide to send a punitive expedition in which herds were captured and some nobles Filottranese were imprisoned. During the foray, an Osimian while fleeing, lost a boot which at Filottrano was heralded as a victory. The token boot then became a symbol of revenge. Now, every year, the young Filottranese parade through the streets a straw puppet on horseback, wearing the historic boot. After various circuits through the town, the puppet is set ablaze – the boot being kept for the following year.
The tradition is celebrated annually on the first Sunday in August in a contest between the districts where the winner holds the boot.
A procession of citizens wearing that era's historic costumes frames the contest and the whole concludes with a bonfire.
Typical taverns serving delicious local dishes complete the Medieval atmosphere of the festival.
